About Gauhati University

Gauhati University (GU) is a state university located at Jalukbari, Guwahati in Assam, established in 1948 — the first university in the North-Eastern region of India and one of the oldest in eastern India. The university serves as the principal affiliating university for colleges across Lower Assam and operates a wide network of more than 350 affiliated and constituent colleges.

Gauhati University offers UG, PG, M.Phil and Ph.D programmes across arts, sciences, commerce, management, technology (with five-year integrated and four-year programmes), law, education and engineering through 39 post-graduate departments. PG admission is conducted through the Gauhati University Post Graduate Entrance Test (GUPGET), comprising 100 MCQs in 2 hours, covering 23 MA, 21 M.Sc and 5 M.Tech programmes.

For 2026-27, the GU online application deadline has been notified for 28 February 2026 with subsequent rounds extending to 15 May 2026 for select programmes. The official admission portal is at admissions.gauhati.ac.in.

Eligibility

UG: 10+2 from a recognised board with the prescribed subject combination plus CUET UG score where applicable. PG: Bachelor's degree in the relevant discipline with the minimum aggregate; GUPGET / CUET PG score. M.Tech: B.Tech / B.E. with valid GATE score. Ph.D: Master's with 55% (50% reserved); GU research entrance / NET-JRF / GATE.

   Visit admissions.gauhati.ac.in for the 2026-27 admission notification, programme list, GUPGET schedule and fee structure.

   Apply for GUPGET / CUET
   Register on the Gauhati University admissions portal for GUPGET, or apply for CUET UG / PG on the NTA portal as applicable to your programme.
3. 3
   Appear for the entrance
   Sit GUPGET (single OMR-based test) or CUET as per the programme. Download the admit card from the relevant portal.
4. 4
   Counselling and admission
   Participate in GU centralised counselling, exercise programme / college preferences and confirm allotment by paying the admission fee at the Jalukbari campus.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available for eligible candidates at this university.

GU merit scholarships, North-East Region scholarships, SC/ST/OBC/EWS post-matric scholarships, Assam state CMSS / Pragyan Bharati scholarship for high scorers.

Reservations

Assam state reservation: SC 7%, ST(P) 10%, ST(H) 5%, OBC/MOBC 27%, EWS 10%; PwBD 5% horizontal. Assam Higher Education state quota for in-state candidates.
