About Indian Institute of Science
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a public deemed research university located in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Founded in 1909 with the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Government of India and the Maharaja of Mysore, IISc is India's oldest and most prestigious research institute. The institute was granted Deemed-to-be-University status in 1958 and conferred the "Institution of Eminence" recognition by the Ministry of Education in 2018. The 400-acre main campus in central Bengaluru is locally known as the "Tata Institute" — a tribute to its founder.
IISc has 40+ departments organised into 6 divisions: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Electrical Sciences, Interdisciplinary Research, Mechanical Sciences, and Physical and Mathematical Sciences. The institute offers two UG programmes (B.Sc Research and B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing) and a wide range of M.Tech, M.Des, M.Sc (Engg), MBA, MMgmt, and PhD/integrated PhD programmes. IISc has been ranked 1st in the NIRF University category for several consecutive years.
IISc UG admissions follow two distinct routes: B.Sc (Research) admits via the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) — replacing the discontinued KVPY — with applications on admission.iisc.ac.in. B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing admits exclusively through JEE Advanced + JoSAA counselling. PG admissions follow programme-specific entries: GATE (M.Tech), CAT (MMgmt/MBA), and IISc-specific entrance for select Master's programmes. PhD admissions go through the IISc selection process based on UGC-NET / GATE / IISc entrance plus interview.
