About National Law School of India University

National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is a public state-funded national law university located on Nagarbhavi Road, Bengaluru, Karnataka. Established under the National Law School of India Act, 1986 (Karnataka) and notified in the Gazette on 29 August 1987 with the first batch enrolled in 1988, NLSIU is the country's first National Law University and a member of the Consortium of National Law Universities. It is consistently ranked first in the NIRF Law category.

NLSIU is a fully residential 23-acre campus offering BA (Hons), BA LLB (Hons), LLB (Hons), LLM, MPP (Master of Public Policy), MPhil and PhD programmes. The university is known for its rigorous trimester-based academic year, an active centre and policy ecosystem (Centre for Child and the Law, Centre for Women and the Law, Centre for Comparative Constitutional Law and Administrative Law, Centre for Law and Policy Research) and consistently strong placements in tier-1 law firms.

Eligibility

BA (Hons) / LLB (Hons): Class 10+2 from a recognised board with at least 45% (40% for SC/ST/PwBD); valid NLSAT 2026 rank. BA LLB (Hons): 10+2 with at least 45% (40% for SC/ST/PwBD); valid CLAT 2026 UG rank. LLM: 5-year integrated LLB / 3-year LLB with at least 55% (50% for SC/ST/PwBD); valid CLAT PG 2026 rank. MPP: a Bachelor's with at least 50% (45% for SC/ST/PwBD); valid NLSIU MPP entrance score. PhD: Master's in Law or related field with at least 55% (50% for SC/ST/PwBD) and qualifying NLSIU research entrance plus interview.

NLSIU offers a need-based scholarship programme covering up to 100% tuition fee waiver, the Trilegal Scholarship, the Rohini Nilekani Centre for Studies in Public Policy fellowships for MPP students, and Government of India Post-Matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/EWS through the National Scholarship Portal.

Reservations

Reservation per Karnataka state and Government of India norms applicable to NLSIU: 25% of BA LLB (Hons) seats are reserved for Karnataka domicile candidates per the High Court of Karnataka direction; SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL applicable per state, EWS 10%, PwBD 5% horizontal. Foreign Nationals (FN), Single Girl Child and other supernumerary seats per the prospectus.
