About Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), established in 2007 (operational from 2008) at Valiamala in Thiruvananthapuram, is India's first university dedicated to the study, research and development in space sciences and technology. IIST is wholly funded by the Department of Space (DoS), Government of India, and operates under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It has been declared a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act.
IIST has four departments — Aerospace Engineering, Avionics, Physics, and Mathematics — and offers B.Tech (Aerospace Engineering; Electronics & Communication Engineering with specialisation in Avionics; Engineering Physics), 5-year Dual Degree (BTech + MS or BTech + MTech), MTech (in 10+ specialisations), MS by research, MSc (Astronomy & Astrophysics, Solid State Physics, Earth System Sciences) and PhD. Top performers are absorbed into ISRO/DoS centres after graduation.
UG admissions to BTech and Dual Degree are through JEE Advanced (the top JEE Advanced rankers are considered). MTech through GATE. MSc through IIST-conducted entrance. PhD through IIST PhD entrance. Central reservation applies (SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, EWS 10%, PwBD 5%).
