About Raja Mansingh Tomar Music and Arts University
Raja Mansingh Tomar Music and Arts University (RMTU), established in 2009 by an Act of the Madhya Pradesh state legislature, is a unique state university dedicated exclusively to the study, practice, research and propagation of music, fine arts, performing arts and the cultural heritage of India. Located at Gwalior — the historic Tansen birthplace and the seat of the Gwalior Gharana of Hindustani classical music — the university is named after Raja Mansingh Tomar, the 15th-century king of Gwalior who patronised music and is credited with developing the Dhrupad style.
RMTU has six faculties — Faculty of Music, Faculty of Dance & Choreography, Faculty of Drama & Theatre, Faculty of Visual Arts, Faculty of Performing Arts and Faculty of Cultural Studies. The university offers BA/MA/MPhil/PhD in Indian classical and folk music (Hindustani, Carnatic), instrumental music (sitar, sarangi, tabla, sarod), Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Manipuri, dramatic arts and visual arts. NAAC B+ accredited.
Admissions are through RMTU-conducted aptitude test (performance audition) + academic qualifications. CUET PG accepted for select PG programmes. PhD through RMTU PhD entrance + interview.
