About International Institute for Population Sciences
International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), established in 1956 as the Demographic Training and Research Centre and renamed IIPS in 1985 — declared a Deemed-to-be University in 1985 under the UGC Act — is a premier research institute dedicated to population sciences, demography, family health and reproductive health. Located at Govandi, Mumbai, IIPS is wholly funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It is the principal coordinating institute for the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) — a flagship national health survey.
IIPS has 7 academic divisions — Public Health & Mortality Studies, Migration & Urban Studies, Population Policies & Programmes, Mathematical Demography, Fertility & Reproductive Health, Survey Research & Data Analytics, and Family & Generations. Offers MPhil-PhD Integrated Programme in Population Studies, MA/MSc (Population Studies, Biostatistics, Demography), and Diploma programmes. Recognised by UGC and works closely with United Nations Population Division.
Admissions through IIPS Entrance Examination + interview. Most programmes are research-oriented (MPhil-PhD). Candidates with strong quantitative background (Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Demography) preferred. Foreign student admissions through MEA/ICCR fellowship scheme.
