About Shivaji University
Shivaji University, established in 1962 in Kolhapur, is a state university serving the southern Maharashtra region. The university is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire (whose royal capital was Raigad and Pune, but who maintained strong influence over Kolhapur — the seat of one of the post-Shivaji princely Maratha states). Shivaji University serves Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts of Maharashtra.
Shivaji University has 42 teaching departments organised into faculties of Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Commerce, Education, Law, Engineering & Technology and Health Sciences. It affiliates 300+ colleges across the three districts. NAAC A++ accredited (the highest tier — Cycle 4, 2023) — placing it among the top state universities in India. Several departments operate as Department of Atomic Energy / DST recognised research centres.
