About North Eastern Hill University
North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), established in 1973 by the North-Eastern Hill University Act 1973, is a Central University serving as the principal higher education institution for the hill states of the North-East. Headquartered at Mawkynroh-Umshing, Shillong (Meghalaya) with a major regional campus at Tura (West Garo Hills, Meghalaya), NEHU is the apex Central University for Meghalaya and historically served Mizoram and Nagaland as well (before Mizoram University 2001 and Nagaland University 1994 were separately created).
NEHU has 52 teaching departments organised into 8 schools — Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Education, Economics & Management, Law, Technology and Environmental Sciences. The Centre for Distance and Online Education (NEHU CDOE) serves the entire NE region. The University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Department of Khasi are flagship units. NAAC A+ accredited. Ranked among NIRF top universities. Famous alumni include former Prime Minister-aspirant tribal leaders and senior IAS officers.
