About Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research
Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, established in 1959 as Sambalpur Medical College and upgraded to VIMSAR (state-funded autonomous status) in 2008, was declared a state Health Sciences University in 2014 by an Act of the Odisha state legislature. Located at Burla, Sambalpur (alongside the VSSUT engineering campus), VIMSAR is the second oldest medical college of Odisha (after SCB Medical College Cuttack, 1944). The institute is named after the 19th-century western Odisha freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai.
VIMSAR has Medical College (offering MBBS — 200 seats), Dental College, Nursing College, College of Physiotherapy and a 1200-bed teaching hospital. The institute is recognised by NMC, DCI, INC. Strong research focus on tropical medicine, communicable diseases prevalent in western Odisha tribal areas, and maternal-child health.
