About University of Allahabad
University of Allahabad, established on 23 September 1887 by the University of Allahabad Act 1887, is one of the oldest modern universities in India (4th-oldest after Calcutta, Bombay, Madras — all 1857). The university was elevated to Central University status in 2005 by the University of Allahabad (Central University) Act 2005. Located at Senate Hall, Allahabad (now Prayagraj), the university is colloquially called "the Oxford of the East" for its illustrious legacy in producing scholars, civil servants, freedom fighters, Nobel laureates and Prime Ministers (e.g. former PMs Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Chandra Shekhar; physicists Meghnad Saha, Harish-Chandra; Nobel laureate Subramanyan Chandrasekhar).
Allahabad U has 35 teaching departments organised into 11 faculties — Arts, Sciences, Commerce, Law, Engineering & Technology, Medicine, Education, Music & Fine Arts, Indian and Foreign Languages, Indology, and Vocational Studies. NAAC accredited; recognised by UGC under Section 12(B).
