About Banaras Hindu University
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a central university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1916 with the support of Annie Besant and Maharaja of Darbhanga, BHU was incorporated under the Banaras Hindu University Act 1915 and is one of the largest residential universities in Asia, with a campus of over 1,300 acres at the main Varanasi site and an additional South Campus at Barkachha (Mirzapur).
BHU has 6 institutes, 14 faculties and over 140 departments offering UG, PG, integrated, professional and PhD programmes across arts, commerce, science, performing arts, social sciences, education, law, agriculture, Sanskrit and Indian knowledge systems, management, medical sciences (IMS-BHU) and engineering (IIT-BHU, an autonomous Institute of National Importance under the IIT Council).
Most BHU UG and PG admissions are now conducted through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG/PG) administered by the National Testing Agency. IIT (BHU) admits B.Tech students through JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA counselling, and conducts its own M.Tech/M.Pharm and PhD entrances. The Institute of Medical Sciences admits via NEET UG/PG and INI-CET.
