About Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies
Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS), established in 1967 (Government Institute) and declared a Deemed-to-be University in 1988 under the UGC Act, is a private deemed university dedicated to Tibetan studies. Located at Sarnath, Varanasi (the place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon), CIHTS was established by the Government of India in cooperation with the Dalai Lama to preserve Tibetan Buddhist studies in the aftermath of the 1959 Tibetan exodus.
CIHTS has departments of Tibetan Studies, Indian Buddhist Studies (Pali/Sanskrit), Tibetan Language & Literature, Tibetan History & Civilization, Tantric Studies, and Comparative Religions. Strong programmes in Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan medicine and Tibetan art. NAAC accredited.
Admissions through CIHTS Entrance Test + interview. CUET UG/PG accepted for select. PhD through CIHTS PhD entrance. Tibetan/Sanskrit/Pali proficiency required.
