About University of Burdwan

University of Burdwan (BU), Burdwan was established on 15 June 1960 by an Act of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, with its origins linked to the patronage of the Maharaja of Burdwan. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956. The main campus is located at Rajbati, Bardhaman, on the grounds of the former Burdwan Raj palace — spread over 388 acres alongside Krishnasayar (a heritage lake) — and serves as one of West Bengal's major affiliating universities for the western region.

University of Burdwan operates through faculties of Arts, Commerce, Law & Education; Science; Engineering, Technology & Management; and Dental Medicine. Programmes include BA/MA in Bengali, English, Sanskrit, Pali, Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Santali (one of few universities offering MA Santali), History, Philosophy, Geography, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Mass Communication; BSc/MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Microbiology, Biotech, Botany, Zoology, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Anthropology; BTech/M.Tech in Mining, Mechanical, Civil, ECE, CSE; MBA, MCA, LLB/LLM, BEd/MEd, M.Pharm, BPEd, Master of Library & Information Science, and PhD. Admissions for UG use CET-WB combined merit; PG via the university's own entrance test (PET); MBA via JEMAT/CAT/MAT/CMAT; engineering via WBJEE.

University of Burdwan is NAAC A grade accredited and has over 250 affiliated colleges across Burdwan, Hooghly, Birbhum and Bankura districts. It is one of the largest affiliating universities in West Bengal. The Rajbati campus retains heritage Raj-era buildings repurposed for academics, alongside modern science blocks and the engineering campus at Golapbag. Notable departments include the Mining Engineering Department (one of the oldest in India), the Microbiology Department (pioneer in fermentation research), the Santali Department (preserving tribal language), and the School of Languages. The university has separate hostels, central library, sports complex, the Golapbag botanical garden, and academic exchanges with universities in Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.
