About Jadavpur University
Jadavpur University (JU) is a public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal. The university traces its lineage to the National Council of Education (Bengal) founded in 1906 as part of the Swadeshi movement; it became a degree-granting institution in 1955 under the Jadavpur University Act. JU has two campuses — the main Jadavpur campus and the Salt Lake (Sector III) campus — and is consistently among the top state universities in NIRF rankings.
Jadavpur University is organised into 3 faculties — Arts, Science and Engineering & Technology — with 35+ departments offering UG, PG, MPhil, PhD and integrated programmes. The Faculty of Engineering & Technology is among the most reputed engineering schools in eastern India, while the Faculty of Arts hosts the celebrated departments of Comparative Literature, English, Bengali, History, International Relations, Political Science and Sociology.
Most JU UG engineering admissions are through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) followed by centralised counselling. UG admissions to BA/BSc/BCom programmes are merit-based on Class 12 marks, with some departments conducting their own entrance test. PG admissions go through department-specific entrance exams or merit; PhD admissions through the JU PhD entrance plus interview.
