About University of North Bengal
University of North Bengal (NBU), Siliguri was established in 1962 by an Act of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly to serve the higher education needs of the northern districts of West Bengal — Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956. The main campus is located at Raja Rammohunpur, near Siliguri, spread over 330 acres at the foothills of the Himalayas in the Terai region.
University of North Bengal is organised into faculties of Arts, Commerce, Law & Education; Science; and Engineering, Technology & Management. Programmes include BA/MA in Bengali, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Nepali (one of few universities offering MA Nepali), Tibetan Language, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Geography, Economics, Anthropology, Mass Communication, Defence Studies (rare offering); BSc/MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Botany, Zoology, Geography, Computer Science, Microbiology, Biotech, Tea Husbandry & Technology (unique programme), Geological Sciences; BTech/M.Tech in CSE, Civil, EE, ECE, Food Technology; M.Pharm, MBA, MCA, LLB/LLM, BEd/MEd, M.Lib&InfSc and PhD. Admissions are via CET-WB / CUET for UG; PG via PET (university entrance); engineering via WBJEE.
University of North Bengal is NAAC A grade accredited and is one of India's few universities offering programmes in Tea Husbandry & Technology (catering to the Darjeeling-Dooars tea industry) and Nepali language. The university has over 90 affiliated colleges across the six North Bengal districts. The Raja Rammohunpur campus is at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas with views of Mount Kanchenjunga on clear days. Notable centres include the Centre for Himalayan Studies, the Centre for Floristic Research, the Tea Cluster Research Centre, and the Salt Lake Campus extension for NBU Law School. The university has separate hostels, central library, the NBU Health Centre, sports facilities and academic linkages with universities in Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
