About Patna University

Patna University (PU) is a state university located in Patna, Bihar, established in 1917 — the seventh-oldest university in the Indian subcontinent and the oldest in Bihar. Originally functioning as an affiliating university of the Eastern region, PU was reconstituted as a teaching-cum-residential university in 1962 and now operates from the historic Mahendru and Saidpur campuses in Patna.

Patna University offers UG, PG, M.Phil and Ph.D programmes across humanities, social sciences, sciences, commerce, management, education and law through 9 faculties and 35 postgraduate departments / centres. UG and PG admissions are conducted through the Patna University Entrance Test (PUET) — a programme-specific entrance test for several courses, with the balance through merit on the qualifying examination.

For 2026-27, PUET UG is scheduled for 12-14 June 2026 and PUET PG for 8-12 July 2026. Application opens 1 April 2026; the application fee is approximately ₹1100. The official admission portal is at pup.ac.in.

Eligibility

UG: 10+2 from a recognised board with the prescribed subject combination; PUET UG score. PG: Bachelor's degree in the relevant discipline; PUET PG score. M.Phil / Ph.D: Master's with UGC-prescribed aggregate (55% / 50% reserved); PU research entrance / NET-JRF / GATE.

   Visit pup.ac.in for the PUET 2026 notification with programme list, syllabus, exam pattern and centre options.

   Apply online for PUET
   Register on the PU online application portal between 1 April and 30 April / 15 May 2026 (per programme), upload documents and pay the ~₹1100 application fee.

   Appear for PUET
   PUET UG is on 12-14 June 2026 and PUET PG on 8-12 July 2026.

   Counselling and admission
   Qualified candidates participate in PU counselling, exercise programme preferences and confirm seat allotment by reporting to the Mahendru / Saidpur campus, Patna.

Scholarships are available for eligible candidates at this university.

Bihar State Government scholarships (Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana, Mukhyamantri Medhavriti Yojana), SC/ST/OBC/EWS/EBC post-matric scholarships through NSP and PU merit awards.

Reservations

Bihar state reservation: SC 16%, ST 1%, EBC 18%, BC 12%, EWS 10%, BC women 3%; PwBD 5% horizontal. Bihar domicile preferred for state-quota seats.
