About Bharathiar University

Bharathiar University is a public state university located at Maruthamalai Road, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Established in February 1982 by the Government of Tamil Nadu under the Bharathiar University Act, the university is named after the celebrated Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi. It serves the western region of Tamil Nadu and is one of the leading state universities in NIRF rankings.

BU has 38 university departments organised into 17 schools, plus 7 constituent colleges and 130+ affiliated colleges across the western Tamil Nadu region. It offers 100+ UG, PG, MPhil and PhD programmes spanning humanities, social sciences, sciences, mathematics, computer science, life sciences, biotechnology, education, commerce, management (BU School of Management Studies), and physical education. The Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) extends programmes to learners across India.

Bharathiar University admissions are largely merit-based on qualifying-examination marks for UG and PG programmes, with TANCET 2026 accepted for MBA/MCA/M.Sc programmes that require an entrance. PhD admissions are through the BU PhD entrance plus interview. Distance education programmes are conducted in two annual sessions (February and August/September).

Eligibility

UG (BVoc/BPEd): Class 10+2 from a recognised board with subject combinations as per programme; minimum 40-50% (relaxation for SC/ST/MBC/BC). PG: Bachelor's degree in the relevant discipline with at least 50% (45% for SC/ST/MBC/BC). MBA/MCA: Bachelor's with at least 50% and a valid TANCET 2026 score. PhD: Master's with 55%+ and qualifying UGC-NET / GATE / BU PhD entrance plus interview.
