About Manonmaniam Sundaranar University
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) is a public state university located in Abishekapatti, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. Established by the Government of Tamil Nadu through the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Act on 7 September 1990 with academic operations beginning in 1992, the university is named after the celebrated Tamil literary scholar Prof P Sundaranar (also known as "Manonmaniam"). MSU serves the four southernmost districts of Tamil Nadu — Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari.
MSU has 32 university departments organised into 11 schools, 7 constituent colleges and 100+ affiliated colleges. It offers UG, PG, MPhil and PhD programmes across humanities, social sciences, sciences, education, environmental sciences, marine sciences (Centre for Marine Science and Technology at Rajakkamangalam), music, and management. The Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education (DDCE) extends programmes through online and distance modes.
MSU admissions are based on both merit in the qualifying examination and entrance examinations depending on the programme. MBA/MCA admissions accept TANCET 2026 scores. PhD admissions are through the MSU PhD entrance plus interview. Distance education through DDCE runs in two annual sessions (July and January).
