About Periyar University
Periyar University is a public state university located at Salem, Tamil Nadu. Established in 1997 by the Tamil Nadu Government through the Periyar University Act, the university is named after the social reformer Thanthai Periyar. The 660-acre main campus on the foothills of the Yercaud hills serves the western Tamil Nadu region with affiliated colleges across Salem, Namakkal, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts.
Periyar University has 33 university departments organised into 17 schools, 4 constituent colleges and 100+ affiliated colleges. It offers UG, PG, MPhil and PhD programmes across humanities, social sciences, sciences, education, computer science, biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology, geology, food science, management (PRIMS), commerce, and Tamil studies. The university also operates the Periyar Centre for Distance Education (PRIDE).
Periyar University admissions are largely merit-based on qualifying-examination marks. MBA/MCA admissions accept TANCET 2026 scores. PhD admissions are through the PU PhD entrance plus interview. Distance education through PRIDE runs in two annual sessions and accepts applications throughout the year up to programme-specific cut-offs.
