About Tamilnadu Music and Fine Arts University
Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University (TMFAU), established in 2013 by an Act of the Tamil Nadu state legislature, is a unique state university dedicated to the study, practice and propagation of Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam, Tamil traditional arts, visual arts and theatre. Located at Chepauk, Chennai, TMFAU is the first dedicated music and arts university of Tamil Nadu — preserving and promoting the rich Tamil performing arts heritage including Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam (one of India's eight classical dance forms), Tamil cinema studies and folk arts.
TMFAU has 11 faculties — Carnatic Music (Vocal, Veena, Violin, Mridangam, Flute), Bharatanatyam, Tamil Traditional Music (Mukha Veena, Nadaswaram, Thavil), Visual Arts (painting, sculpture), Folk Arts, Drama & Theatre, Indian Classical Music (Hindustani), Music Therapy, Music Composition, Music Production & Engineering, and Cultural Studies. Offers BFA, BMu, MFA, MMu, MPhil and PhD programmes.
Admissions through TMFAU-conducted aptitude test (audition/performance test) + interview. CUET UG/PG accepted for select theoretical programmes. PhD through TMFAU PhD entrance + research interview.
