About Tamil University

Tamil University, established in 1981 by an Act of the Tamil Nadu state legislature, is a unique state university dedicated to the study, research and propagation of Tamil language, literature and culture. Located at Vakaiyur, Thanjavur, the university was established to make Tamil the medium of higher education and research — one of the few universities in India dedicated to a single language.

Tamil University has departments of Tamil Language & Literature, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Folklore, Performing Arts, History, Archaeology, Architecture & Town Planning, Tamil Computing, Tamil Studies, Manuscript Studies and Indian Languages. Offers MA, MPhil, PhD and Diploma programmes — all in Tamil medium. NAAC accredited.
