About University of Madras
University of Madras, established on 5 September 1857 by the Madras University Act 1857, is one of the three oldest universities in India (alongside University of Bombay and University of Calcutta — all established 1857). Headquartered at Centenary Building, Chepauk, Chennai, the University of Madras is the principal university of Tamil Nadu and parent institution to many other South Indian universities (Annamalai, Madurai Kamraj, Bharathiar etc. were originally affiliated to it). Famous alumni include Sir CV Raman, Subramanyan Chandrasekhar, Srinivasa Ramanujan, S Radhakrishnan and many Nobel laureates.
University of Madras has 87 academic departments organised into 18 schools and faculties — Arts, Humanities, Sciences, Sciences, Indian and Foreign Languages, Education, Engineering & Technology, Information & Communication, Commerce, Management, Education, Law, Tamil Studies, Indology, Performing Arts, Sciences. It affiliates 121 colleges across northern Tamil Nadu. NAAC A++ accredited (Cycle 4, 2024). Ranked among India's top state universities by NIRF.
UG admissions to affiliated colleges through Tamil Nadu state centralised system (TNEA for engineering; Plus Two merit for arts/sciences). PG admissions through UoM PG entrance or CUET PG. PhD through UoM PhD entrance.
